I thought a lot about this on my way home.
In the Vestry the following Sunday, I mentioned this conversation to our Vicar, ending with the words “Perhaps this is a sign, that this is the time for the Church to do something in the Village Hall?” This is how the idea for the Friday Drop In was borne.
We decided to do a trial of four Fridays up to 10th December 2010, to see if it would work. After two or three weeks we realised it was going to be quite successful and extended for a further week before Christmas.
The first week was quite an unknown event. Several people volunteered to help and we made a lot of cakes and set up the hall. We waited and wondered if anybody would arrive! At exactly 9.30 am our first visitor came through the door. She stayed the whole morning and has returned every week. She likes to knit and has since made hats and mittens for us to place in the church, for anybody who needs them. Some people come every week, others drop in when they have time. The surroundings are very friendly and cordial.
The format is simple: anybody of any age is welcome to come along, from 9.30am onwards. There is tea and coffee, delicious home-made cakes, pastries and biscuits – as much as you can eat and drink. There is no charge – we ask only for your donation – whatever you can afford. You will be welcomed by friendly volunteers and can sit and chat with anybody, for as long as you like. If you prefer to sit quietly, you can of course do so.
We re-opened on 7th January 2011 and will be meeting at Whitehill Village Hall every Friday throughout the year. Do, please, come along and meet us. If you would like any further information or need transport, please contact me on 01420 489044.

“Many of my patients are complaining to me”, said my Doctor when I met her some time during last October. Upon enquiring the reason, she said it was because Tesco had recently closed their café and people who used to meet there and chat with their friends no longer had anywhere to go. Surely, I said, they could walk down to the café in the shopping centre? No, she replied, some have difficulty walking, some have no transport, some don’t have much money. They are not so fortunate as you."
